Counseling or Coaching — Which Fits?

They're different services. During a free consultation, Dr. Watkins will help you find the right one.

Choose Counseling if…

You're seeking clinical support for mental health concerns — anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, or a diagnosable condition — under a licensed clinician, with the protections of therapy.

Choose Coaching if…

You're well and want a thinking partner to move forward — clarify direction, set boundaries, recover from burnout, or lead without self-erasure. Coaching is forward-focused, not treatment.

In Her Words

My Approach

My style is warm, direct, and deeply practical. I help clients connect the dots between past experiences, current patterns, emotional responses, and relationship dynamics. Insight matters — but insight alone isn't enough. Clients also need language, tools, boundaries, and a plan.

Working from a trauma-informed, culturally responsive lens, I help clients understand survival mode, strengthen emotional regulation, improve communication, and move toward more authentic and accountable living. I don't treat race, gender, Black womanhood, family systems, faith, money, work, or survival as side issues — I bring them into the center when they're clinically relevant. Together, we make room for truth, rest, accountability, softness, boundaries, and healing that honors the whole person.

"Where insight becomes language, language becomes boundaries, and boundaries become change."
How I Work

My Theoretical Approach

My orientation is integrative and trauma-informed, drawing from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Acceptance & Commitment Therapy, DBT-informed skills, family systems theory, and culturally responsive counseling. I help clients understand how past experiences, identity, relationships, survival responses, and current stressors shape their beliefs, emotions, and behaviors — balancing insight with practical tools for regulation, communication, boundaries, and values-aligned change.

Trauma-Informed Care+
I use a trauma-informed lens to help clients understand how survival responses — fight, flight, freeze, fawn, flop, or overfunctioning — may have developed as protection. Therapy focuses on reducing shame, increasing safety, and developing new responses that support your current life rather than keeping you stuck in old survival patterns.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)+
I draw from CBT to help clients identify the beliefs, thought patterns, and behaviors that contribute to anxiety, depression, conflict, self-doubt, perfectionism, and avoidance — and to practice more grounded, realistic, values-aligned responses.
Narrative Therapy+
Narrative therapy informs my work by helping clients examine the stories they've been told, the stories they've carried, and the stories they're ready to rewrite — reclaiming voice, meaning, identity, and agency while separating who they are from what they have survived.
Family Systems & Relational Therapy+
I use a systems lens to explore how family patterns, relationship dynamics, cultural expectations, communication styles, and roles shape current functioning — especially helpful with couples, family conflict, boundary-setting, workplace stress, and intergenerational patterns.
Culturally Responsive & Multicultural Counseling+
My approach is culturally responsive and identity-affirming. Healing doesn't happen outside of culture, race, gender, family, faith, work, community, or lived experience. I create space for clients — especially Black and Brown women — to explore survival expectations, systemic stress, identity, and the pressure to remain strong while still needing care.
Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)+
I integrate ACT to help clients clarify their values, notice difficult thoughts and emotions without being controlled by them, and take committed action toward the life they want to build.
DBT-Informed Skills+
I use DBT-informed skills to support emotional regulation, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness, and the ability to pause before reacting — especially useful for intense emotions, relationship conflict, anxiety, trauma responses, or relapse vulnerability.
Somatic / Nervous-System-Informed Work+
I incorporate nervous-system-informed psychoeducation to help clients recognize how stress, trauma, and emotional activation show up in the body — learning to identify body cues, regulate distress, and respond with more awareness and choice.

Access to Care

The Sister W.E.L.L.S. Therapy Access Program

Cost should not be the reason a person goes without care. The Therapy Access Program offers reduced rates across core services, so clients experiencing financial strain can begin — and continue — therapy.

Reduced rates range from $70 to $250, depending on the service and tier.

Tiered rates apply to private-pay clients and are assigned during intake through a brief, confidential conversation — no documentation of income is required. A limited number of spaces are reserved at each tier, and your rate is reviewed at least annually or sooner if your circumstances change. Requesting a reduced rate has no effect on the quality, length, or frequency of your care. Intensives, supervision, and legal or court-related services are not included in the program.

Couples · PREPARE/ENRICH®

Licensure & Location

Dr. Sherrá Watkins is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor–Supervisor (LCMHC-S) and Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist (LCAS) in the State of North Carolina. Counseling is provided only to clients physically located in North Carolina at the time of each session. All services are delivered virtually through a secure, HIPAA-compliant telehealth platform.

Counseling vs. Coaching

Counseling (psychotherapy) and coaching are distinct services. Counseling addresses mental health concerns under Dr. Watkins' clinical license. Coaching is not therapy, is not a substitute for mental health treatment, does not involve diagnosis, and is not billable to insurance. To protect the clinical relationship, counseling and coaching are not provided to the same individual at the same time.

Informed Consent

Before beginning services, every client reviews and signs an informed consent agreement. It explains the nature of counseling and coaching, the benefits and limits of each, confidentiality and its exceptions, telehealth practices, records, communication and after-hours expectations, and your rights as a client — including the right to ask questions and to end services at any time. Participation is voluntary, and consent can be withdrawn at any time.

Fees & Payment

Counseling is billed per 50-minute session at $195 self-pay, or through in-network insurance where applicable; superbills are provided for out-of-network reimbursement. Coaching and pre-marital packages are flat-rate, self-pay investments paid at booking, with payment plans available on multi-session packages. A valid card is kept securely on file. Full fees, session lengths, and any cancellation or late-reschedule terms are provided in writing in your service agreement before your first session.

Good Faith Estimate (No Surprises Act)

Under federal law, clients who are uninsured or not billing insurance have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate of expected costs. You will receive one in writing before scheduling or upon request.

Insurance & Payment

Dr. Watkins is in-network with Aetna, Cigna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Oxford, UnitedHealthcare, and Optum. Self-pay is welcome, and superbills are provided for out-of-network reimbursement. Coaching is self-pay and not billed to insurance.

Confidentiality

Your privacy is protected under HIPAA and North Carolina law, with limited exceptions required by law (such as risk of harm to self or others, or abuse of a child or vulnerable adult). Outcomes vary by individual; no specific result is guaranteed.
